Wondering about that odd solar panel building next...
Apparently the entire thing is a model for a development in Park Slope.
The real question, however, is what to do about all of the property bordering on the Gowanus (Expressway). More harmful to our community than the Gowanus (Canal), land use surrounding the Expressway seems to be taboo subject. It seems to me that the ONLY way to make properties adjacent to the Expressway competitive and...

Brooklyn Paper Lets Fort Greene Idiots Rant
Please excuse this foray into Fort Greene. I hate when neighborhood blogs cover things outside of their area, but this is too juicy.
The Brooklyn Paper is reporting that one man is outraged over a plan requested by neighbors and business owners to restrict turning for one block in Fort Greene. MENSA candidate Joe Napoli:
““This isn’t Amsterdam — we need our street!” said longtime...

Great Quote on Landmarking
Some disingenuous whining from Cobble Hill about the modification of a home in the historic district:
“The backyard renovations wouldn’t be visible from the street and the rooftop work would only make one section of the building six feet taller than its neighbors — but that’s enough to trigger an upward-sprouting, light-hogging development trend that could forever change the look of the...

Zoning Tradeoffs Result in 7 Story Building
The Columbia Waterfront Neighborhood Association recently brought to the world’s attention the new development proposed at the site of Sokol’s furniture store, which recently closed up shop after centuries decades in the same location. The scale and nature of the development can be directly traced to the wrong-headed rezoning of the neighborhood two years ago.

Loving the B61
I love the B61. I ride it frequently, to the gym, the train, to Brooklyn Bridge Park, to Park Slope, to Fairway. Sometimes, I look for excuses to ride it! I find it to be convenient and fast and frequent. My elderly Grandmother uses it as her main mode of transportation, and she loves it as well. If my family had a bus nowadays (since the elimination of the B71), the B61 would be it.
However,...
There has been a partial building collapse at the corner of Columbia Street and Degraw Street. The building is non-residential and no people were injured or displaced. NYPD, FDNY and the Department of Buildings has responded to the scene to ensure that all safety measures are taken.
Gowanus Whole Foods Gets Some Land Use Setbacks
Whole Foods has been trying to finish up their development for years now on the corner of Third and Third. Last year, we analyzed their traffic study, which was laughable in that it proposed the minimum required “improvements” for the community, and also their pathetic responses to traffic generation concerns. In fairness to them, the response from Community Board 6 to their...

Holiday Events Friday, December 9th, Columbia...
Friday, December 9th, at 5:00 - 7:00, come down to the Columbia Waterfront District Tree Lighting Event at Sackett and Columbia (don’t forget a gift to donate for the kids!). Santa has been known to show up on a fire truck/sled. And then walk on over to Brooklyn Collective for their party. Nice.

A Superhero for Brooklyn
The New York Post and the Brooklyn Paper both report on the creation of a super hero from Brooklyn (apparently Captain America doesn’t count) who took a dip in the Gowanus.
““We think that there’s only a couple of things that happen if you fall into the Gowanus Canal,” said Jimmy Palmiotti, the co-writer of the three-issue series set for a release next spring. “Either you die from...

Fun abounds in Red Hook
Two stories out of Red Hook recently. One regards the Paris Burlesque Club, which we’ve covered before. Apparently it is operating as a strip club. Is anyone really surprised? Apparently the DOB and other licensing agencies, which say they do not have the proper cabaret license. But, hey, that’s what you get for living in a manufacturing zone.
The second regards a douchebag move by...

To close or not to close Carroll Street?
A proposal to close Carroll Street during snowy school days is interesting. The school claims that the surface of its playground is too sensitive, and would rather use Carroll Street as a play area, so as not to incur further costs. A somewhat innovative idea. But leave it to the New York Post to find the lowest common denominator.
“There’s no parking as it is here — this would be a...
